Stand in your backyard and picture it. Is it a crisp rectangle of blue water lined up with the patio, lit up at night like a high-end resort? Or a curving lagoon tucked between the trees with a waterfall spilling in?

That's the first big decision in designing a custom pool: geometric or freeform. Neither one is better. The right one depends on your house, your yard and how your family will use the water.

Can't picture it? We'll design both shapes right into a photo of your backyard so you can compare them side by side. Free.

Geometric pools: clean, modern, built to impress

A geometric pool uses straight lines and clean angles: rectangles, L-shapes, Roman ends and squares. It lines up with the house, the patio and the fence, and it looks sharp from every window.

Geometric works best when:

  • Your home has a modern, traditional or formal look

  • You want to swim laps

  • You may want an automatic safety cover later (covers are simplest on straight sides)

  • Your yard is rectangular and you want to use every foot

Freeform pools: the backyard resort

A freeform pool trades corners for curves, like a pond or a lagoon. It feels relaxed and natural and blends into landscaping, rock work and palms.

Freeform works best when:

  • You want a vacation feel without leaving home

  • Your yard has curves, trees or odd angles to work around

  • You love the idea of rock waterfalls, boulders and lots of plants

  • Your family cares more about floating and playing than laps

Clean, modern, formal

Natural, relaxed, resort

Best for

Laps, tidy layouts

Lounging, odd-shaped yards

Easiest to fit

Possible, but harder

Pairs with

Raised spas, sheer descents, fire bowls

Rock waterfalls, grottos, plants

The secret: you can mix both

Many of our pools blend the two. A rectangle with one curved side. A geometric pool with a freeform sun shelf. A raised spa with straight lines spilling into a curved pool. With gunite, the shape is completely up to you, because the pool is built on site instead of dropped in from a factory mold. More in Gunite vs Fiberglass Pools in Texas

3 questions that make the decision easy

  1. What does my house look like? The pool should look like it was always meant to be there.

  2. How will we use it? Laps and exercise point toward geometric. Floating, kids and parties work with either.

  3. What's already in the yard? Trees, slopes, easements and the shape of the lot often make the call for you.

See it before you decide

The easiest way to choose is to see it. We photograph your backyard and design the pool right into the photos, so you can flip between a geometric and a freeform layout in your real yard. Read See It Before You Swim
